On May 2, 2023, the Aspen Institute Germany hosts the welcome event of the project “Disinformation and the Role of Social Media Influencers in Times of Crises, Conflicts, and Wars”. The project brings together fifteen social media influencers and content creators from Germany, Ukraine, Romania, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Latvia with other actors to discuss their role in democratic societies in times of conflict.
Over the course of 2023, a selected group of influencers and content creators will exchange lessons learned, meet with academics, experts, and decision-makers, and discuss mechanisms of disinformation online and how to counter them. Participants will work together on recommendations to be presented to policymakers, social media platforms, and civil society organizations. The series’ first event on May 2, 2023, will provide an initial opportunity for the participants to become acquainted before working closely together throughout the year. The event puts a special focus on establishing a shared understanding of common values and characteristics of disinformation in different countries and settings. This event will also allow participants to reflect on their role as influencers and discuss it with others. More information on the project can be found here.
The project is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. We thank the Aspen Institute Central Europe, the Aspen Institute Kyiv, and the Aspen Institute Romania for their support.
