On November 23-24, 2022, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted its annual Western Balkans Working Group in Berlin, concluding the 2022 Western Balkans Stakeholder Forum. The goal of this working group was to provide an informal setting for an exchange between high-level representatives from the Western Balkans, selected experts, as well as decision-makers from the German government and legislature. They gathered to discuss the state of EU integration and specific policy recommendations developed during two conferences earlier in the year. With no more than 20 participants, the goal was to have an off-the-record, in-depth debate on these topics.
The key topics that were discussed included democratization and the role of parliaments as well as the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans. This working group also took stock of the current situation in the EU integration process of the Western Balkans countries and worked to identify the next steps that should be taken by decision-makers from the Western Balkans, Germany, and the EU.
