German-American Trade and Tech Dialogue 2022-2023
The first cycle of the German-American Trade and Technology Dialogue took place from October 2022 to October 2023. It brought together decision-makers and experts from politics, business, and civil society in regular workshops and a conference. Against the backdrop of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the rise of authoritarian regimes, and the technological revolution, the GATTD focused on the challenges facing the geopolitical order and global trade and technology policy.
Conference in Berlin (February 14 – 15, 2023)
Under the title “Stronger Together: Towards a Transatlantic Trade and Tech Alliance,” the Aspen Institute Germany organized a two-day conference at the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg in Berlin as part of the GATTD. The event brought together leading academics, policymakers, business and civil society representatives, authors, philosophers, and security experts from the U.S., EU, and Germany. Participants were invited to exchange views on key issues on the transatlantic trade and technology agenda. More than 700 high-level participants attended the conference, which featured a variety of discussion and debate formats.

Workshops
In a series of three interactive online workshops, decision-makers and leading experts identified and discussed obstacles and opportunities for German-American and European-American cooperation in the fields of trade and technology. These discussions served as the basis for defining cooperation opportunities and solutions.
The first workshop took place on December 1, 2022, and focused on supply chain security and data governance. The second workshop, on May 4, 2023, focused on the regulation of new digital technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, and the definition of technology standards in the transatlantic market for sustainable change, such as hydrogen. The third workshop took place on September 12, 2023, and focused on climate, energy and green industrial policy.
