We live in a challenging geoeconomic environment that is currently shaped by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the increasing strategic rivalry between the United States and China as well as Europe. The US elections in November this year also call into question the future of the transatlantic alliance.
Furthermore, the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in February 2024 was largely considered a failure, as the future of the multilateral trading order and EU trade with the Global South – particularly countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America – still looks uncertain. How can new alliances be built while keeping the multilateral trading order from disintegrating? Is there a way for closer economic cooperation between the EU and countries like India and South Africa to foster trade cooperation and enhance resilient supply chains? How might the election outcomes shape the trajectory of the transatlantic alliance, and what key policy areas are to be looked at?
On May 13, 2024, the Aspen Institute Germany – in cooperation with The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) – hosted an Expert Conference “In Search for Partners: The Future of Global Trade” of the Study Group on Globalization and the World Economy.
We welcomed the following high-ranking panelists to this event: Stefan Rouenhoff, MdB, CDU; Rupert Schlegelmilch, Director of Trade Relations with the U.S., Canada, and European Neighborhood Countries at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Trade; Sarah Bäumchen, Member of the Executive Board, German Electro and Digital Industry Association; H.E. Harish Parvathaneni, Ambassador of India to Germany; H.E. Dr. Mzukisi Qobo, Ambassador of South Africa to the WTO; William Klein, Consulting Partner in the Berlin Office of FGS Global; Former Charge d’Affaires Ad Interim, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, and Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in Beijing (2016 to 2021); Dorothea Schütz, Director, Development Policy, Special Instruments of Foreign Trade and Investment Promotion, North Africa, Near and Middle East, German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The panels are moderated by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director, Aspen Institute Germany and Dr. Claudia Schmucker, Head of Geoeconomics Program, DGAP.
