On April 18, 2024, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a background discussion on the current situation in the Western Balkans between representatives of the German Government and staffers of the German Bundestag. Jenny Schultz, Desk Officer Serbia and North Macedonia, Division 302 – South-Eastern and Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Jannis von Oy, Director, Division 212 Bilateral Relations to the Countries of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Central Asia, German Federal Chancellery; Dr. Niels von Redecker, Head of Division 209 Western Balkans, German Federal Foreign Office; and Friederike Wenkel, Deputy Head of Division EB5 EU enlargement, Southeastern Europe, Turkey, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, shared their assessments of the situation in the region from the perspective of their respective divisions and present the priorities, initiatives, and challenges for the this year.
The event was intended for staffers of the German Bundestag from all parties with an interest in the Western Balkans. The discussion took place under the Chatham House Rule.
