On November 29, 2019, the Aspen Institute Germany in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States of America in Berlin will host a Brown Bag Lunch on the topic “A World in Transition: From Multilateralism back to Great Power Competition?” with Bradley Bowman, Senior Director of the Center on Military and Political Power (CMPP) at the Foundation for Defense of Democracy, and Dr. Jana Puglierin, Head of Program, Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, German Council on Foreign Relations. The world has entered a new era of great power competition that will fundamentally shape geopolitics as the United States, China, and other great powers race to expand their global influence. In contrast to this, Europe has been steadily losing ground and risks taking a back seat in this global competition. The discussion will thus aim to examine the current state of great power competition on the international stage. Does the concept of great power competition really capture today’s global reality? How do these great powers assess their own role in the world? And will the EU stay relevant as a world power or will it risk becoming a playground for others?
