As part of “Future Cities – A Transatlantic Townhall Project” Aspen Germany hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Smart Solutions: Technology and the City in a Post-COVID World” on December 8, 2022, in Los Angeles.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a tectonic shift in nearly all aspects of our modern way of life. As our needs, restrictions, and priorities changed, urban spaces had to quickly adapt to reflect those changes in their communities. Among other things, the pandemic acted as a catalyst for digitalization, a transformation that will outlast the current crisis and continue to shape our relationship with the cities we inhabit. At the same time, the pandemic demonstrated the digital divide among urban communities. How can cities harness the positive effects of technology and ensure equity in the digital transformation? How can transatlantic digital cooperation contribute to the smart cities of tomorrow?
The event took place with selected stakeholders on-site in Los Angeles and virtual participation from Berlin and Atlanta. Opening remarks by Erin Bromaghim, Deputy Mayor for International Affairs in Los Angeles, and German Consul General Stefan Schneider were followed by discussions on various aspects of digitalization in the urban and transatlantic context.
Aspen Germany’s “Future Cities – A Transatlantic Townhall Project” brings together a group of urban actors from Berlin, LA, and Atlanta. The project seeks to provide new impetus for the development of the cities we live in and raise awareness of their complexities within the framework of transatlantic discourse.
