On April 3rd, from 12:15 until 2:00 p.m. CET, Aspen Germany hosted a Brown Bag Lunch on the vulnerability and resilience of critical infrastructures entitled “Global Threats Series: Critical Infrastructures Under Attack”.
Recent attacks on the North Stream gas pipelines and on Deutsche Bahn have shown how vulnerable critical infrastructures are to political attacks by foreign intelligence services or non-state actors. Moreover, they raise the question of whether and, if so, which other infrastructures are particularly at risk: Submarine cables supplying the global Internet, the electricity networks, or water supplies? Especially Russia in its warfare not stopping at non-military targets but deliberately attacking (Ukrainian) infrastructure, is a source of concern for international policymakers. How vulnerable are our fixed infrastructures to targeted acts of sabotage? Which sectors are particularly at risk? Are there innovative solutions to minimize the threat?
We discussed these questions with our experts Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel, CEO and Scientific Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH (HPI) at the University of Potsdam and Dr. Bernhard Rabert, Business Manager Political Relations and Government Sales of OneFiber. The event was part of Aspen Germany’s Global Threats Series.
