International Conference on Bosnia and Herzegovina“New Government, New Reform Efforts?”

    • June 25, 2023

    • June 26, 2023

The Aspen Institute Germany and the Southeast Europe Association had the honor of organizing an international conference on Bosnia and Herzegovina, titled “New Government, New Reform Efforts?”, which was generously supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. The in-person conference was held on Monday, June 26, 2023.
The upcoming months were crucial for the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite positive political momentum following parliamentary and presidential elections in October 2022 and the granting of EU candidate status in December 2022, critical challenges remained, including stalled institutions, corruption, and ethnic tensions. Numerous reforms were therefore still needed. The aim of the conference was to develop concrete ideas on how to support the reform process in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the country’s EU integration, how to strengthen the role of civil society in this process, and how the international community could support Bosnia and Herzegovina in these efforts.
Central themes and questions of the conference were: How can reform efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina be meaningfully supported? How can structural problems and inertia in the country be overcome? How can the instruments of the international community be used efficiently? How should incentives and conditioning be balanced? What role should civil society play and how can it be supported?
