On Monday, June 10, 2024, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted the next virtual event in our International Press Roundtable event series, titled “Europe after the Elections”.
The European community and the values it represents are facing major challenges: The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has brought war and suffering closer to the EU’s borders than it has seen for a long time. At the same time, there are movements within the member states that threaten democracy and great European achievements such as freedom, diversity and solidarity, favoring nationalist tendencies instead.
Together with Tonia Mastrobuoni, Berlin Correspondent of La Repubblica, Bartosz Wielinski, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, Cécile Boutelet, German Economics and Business Correspondent of Le Monde, and Christian Feld, EU Correspondent in Brussles of ARD, we tackled the following questions: To what extent do the election results influence the European Union’s stance on the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine? Could a possible electoral success of nationalist, authoritarian or right-wing parties lead to a further intensification of institutional deadlocks? Which policies can be expected from the future European Commission? What role can the media play in standing up for a free, open, and united Europe, when nationalist tendencies are gaining strength, partly due to targeted disinformation?
The discussion was moderated by Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Germany. You can re-watch the event on YouTube.
