International Press Roundtable: “Germany’s Reaction to the War between Israel and Hamas”

On November 21, 2023, from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. Aspen Germany hosted a virtual International Press Roundtable on the topic “Germany’s Response to the War between Israel and Hamas”.
On October 7, armed Hamas militants breached the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip and entered Israel’s Southern District. In the process, 1,400 Israelis were killed, most of them civilians. In addition, hundreds of hostages were kidnapped and taken to Gaza. This brutal attack on Israel shocked the world community. Since then, Israel has responded with a series of retaliatory attacks that have led to the deaths of over several thousand Palestinians. In view of Germany’s historical responsibility, the German government stands firmly by Israel’s side. Within the German public, this explicit support does not find unanimous consent, however, as many are taking to the streets to criticize the government’s position and voice their support for Palestine.
Together with Steven Erlanger, Chief Diplomatic Correspondent of the New York Times, Sophie von der Tann, ARD Correspondent for Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Sam Jones, Berlin Correspondent of the Financial Times, and Pascal Thibaut, Germany Correspondent of Radio France Internationale, we discussed the German response to the war: How is Germany dealing with the escalation in the Middle East compared to other countries? What upheavals are arising in German society as a result of the war and how should we deal with them? How can the media help to reduce populism and the spread of disinformation in times of conflict?
