The importance of European integration in preserving peace and sustaining prosperity has become ever clearer since Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. Thirty years after the establishment of the European Single Market, we would like to address how its effectiveness can be increased. Specifically, how can an inclusive industrial and financial policy look like? Which infrastructures are in need of investment? Where do we stand in terms of digitalization?
To address these issues, Aspen Institute Germany, in cooperation with Aspen Institute Italia, hosted the international digital conference “Rethinking EU Competitiveness in A Changing Geopolitical World” on Thursday, May 04, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. CEST.

The event included an opening discussion chaired by Marta Dassù, Senior Advisor European Affairs; Editor Aspenia, Aspen Institute Italia with Prof. Vittorio Grilli, Chairman of Italy and Corporate Investment Bank EMEA, JP Morgan U.K. and Dr. Marco Buti, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa Chair of economic and monetary integration, European University Institute; followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director at the Aspen Institute Germany with Guntram Wolff, Director and CEO, German Council on Foreign Relations; Daniel Gros, Professor, Institute for European Policy Making, Università Bocconi; Michele Valensise, President, Villa Vigoni; and Aurelio Regina, Delegate for Energy, Confindustria. The event was closed with remarks by Jean-Claude Trichet, Honorary Governor, Banque de France and Armando Varricchio, Italian Ambassador to Germany. The conference was organized in cooperation with Villa Vigoni – German-Italian Centre for European Dialogue.
