International Press Luncheon: One Year of Russia’s War Against Ukraine

    • February 27, 2023

    • February 27, 2023

On February 27, 2023, from 1:00 – 2:15 p.m. Aspen Germany hosted an International Press Luncheon “One Year of Russia’s War Against Ukraine”.
February 24, 2023 will mark one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. After 8 years of war since Russia annexed Crimea, the full-scale invasion sparked major changes across the globe. As well as tens of thousands of deaths and the largest refugee crisis since World War II, trade stability has been thrown into crisis and international relationships have crumbled.
Over the past year, the eyes of the world have been on Ukraine, with major news and media agencies providing live coverage. Such an intensity of focus, while spreading awareness, also plays a huge role in shaping public opinion on the war and the response of national governments.
Together with six journalists, we discussed the international news coverage over the past 12 months: How has western media’s portrayal of the war influenced the global response? Through the ensuing energy crisis, food insecurity, and inflation, how has the media’s representation of the war changed over the past year as the world grows accustomed to war and instability in Europe? We discussed these issues with Emma Graham-Harrison, Senior Affairs Correspondent for The Guardian; Katrin Eigendorf, International Reporter in Ukraine, ZDF; Joanna Kakissis, International Correspondent Ukraine for NPR; Steffen Schwarzkopf, War Reporter in Ukraine, WELT TV; Olga Rudenko, Editor-in-Chief, Kyiv Independent; and Mathias Bölinger, Kiev Correspondent, Deutsche Welle.
If you miss the event, you can watch the recording here.
